Pregnancy is a labor of love. It is also a time of change on all levels. A woman goes through physical, emotional, and social changes. Giving birth for a woman is a process of re-birth of who she is and how she defines herself. The mother’s body is changed and stressed structurally. She is constantly adjusting to the front-bearing weight of the growing fetus and her breasts. This additional weight can cause stress in the muscles of the chest, shoulders, legs, lower back, pelvis, abdomen, and hips. Massage during this time of transformation can complement your prenatal care.
Massage during pregnancy can help do the following:
Reduce Stress and soothe
Increase blood circulation locally and throughout the entire body
Decrease blood pressure and heart rate
Relieve muscle spasms and cramps
Increase quality of movement
Prepare for Labor.
If you have any questions about whether massage may be appropriate for you, talk with your midwife or doctor.
